Building a Reputation for Curiosity

The Gift of Curiosity
If there was one gift being in education gave me it was experiencing the curious nature of children every day. Kids are question machines, they wonder about everything. They are naturally inquisitive.
As people age that wonderment can dissipate as external factors like burnout, routine, or lack of stimulation dull their curiosity. As we’ve previously explored, burnout separates us from things we enjoy, such as hobbies and socializing, which are primary sources for building curiosity.
Curiosity can be a powerful tool for reinvention if actively nurtured through new experiences, reflective practices like journaling, or exploring client needs.
Why Curiosity Fuels Solo Success
Engaging in activities that pique your curiosity helps you rediscover what excites you. Curiosity is also the tool you need to identify gaps in the market or niche you’re in.
In a world where every market or niche is saturated you need a clear understanding of your edge and the small, open spaces in crowded places.
There are countless organic soy candle products, people making jewelry out of found items, and life coaches. What makes your product or services different and worth engaging? In other words, what makes you stand out?
Join your story, personality, or experiences with mini or micro niches that are underserved. Get curious about those niches and how you can elevate them.
Curiosity is a low-risk and possibly high-reward way to innovate, whether you’re just starting or scaling your solo career.
Curiosity for Aspiring Solopreneurs: Lay the Groundwork
Your 9-5, is a great source for inspiration. Inquire about client challenges or industry trends (e.g., “What’s stopping us from serving X better?”) to spark solo career ideas.
Ask Smart Questions: If your solo idea is radically different from your current career that’s even better.
Leverage Your Experience: Ask yourself, “What about my work (client pain points, project management, team structures) either converges with my idea or can be tailored to my idea? This is how you leverage your experiences to build a unique offering.
Try New Roles: Volunteer for projects (at work or in the community) that force you to build new skills or think in different ways.
Start a Curiosity Journal: Gather insights and reflect on ways they could shape your solo venture.
This is a perfect way to build momentum (launching your solo career) while you’re still employed, reducing fear of your future leap.
Curiosity for Solopreneurs: Elevate Your Business
Create your own curiosity machine.
Dig Into Client Needs: Ask current or potential clients about their biggest struggles to refine or expand your services. Invite people to coffee chats. Poll or survey your followers on social media.
Spot Underserved Niches: Research competitors or industry trends to identify underserved needs. I watch videos people in my niche publish and note my thoughts on what they’re saying. I use my quirky spin to create my content.
Test Bold Ideas: Use insights to launch new services or content, like a virtual workshop for your niche, or a live event testing new product ideas.
New ideas are everywhere, and you can access them if you develop a system for curiosity capture.

Success Story
A burned-out teacher spotted a gap: small businesses needed virtual assistants but couldn’t afford full-time help. Curious, she asked local owners about their pain points, launching a side hustle offering VA services. Today, she earns six figures and teaches others her model.
I experienced this too. My niche felt dialed in, but growth stalled in saturated spaces. By getting curious—researching subniches and weaving in my personal story—I found a resonant micro-niche. My platforms instantly grew.
Curiosity turns questions into thriving solo ventures.
My Final Word
Curiosity is your key to escaping burnout or scaling a solo career that aligns with your passions and market needs.
This Week’s Challenge: Ask one question to a client, colleague, or online community (e.g., “What’s your biggest business challenge right now?”) and log the response in a curiosity journal. Write down any ideas it sparks, no judgment.
Let’s build a curious community!
