Building Bridges Across Silos
Expand your solo business through strategic collaboration

The Power of Breaking Down Silos
Have you ever found yourself in a business rut, doing the same things in the same way?
You’ve become hyper-focused on your niche, your audience, your goals. The micro view has left you feeling stuck—creatively, intellectually, intuitively.
Wisely you think, “What if the key to growth lies just outside my bubble?” By connecting with complementary businesses, you can unlock new opportunities without the hassle of formal partnerships.
The fix is networking, right? So, you go to networking events in the hopes of building connections that will elevate your business. However, your attempts prove fruitless.
This was the crux of a recent coffee chat with an acquaintance.
There’s an itch to grow beyond your single owner business silo, but the options repeatedly churn out disappointing results.
The approach is not flawed, the execution is.
There is an art to building business bridges across silos.
Learning to informally collaborate with other solopreneurs or small business owners, and refer one another are low-risk strategies with high-rewards.
The opportunities are endless. Expanded reach, shared audiences, mutual growth.
Why Silos Hold You Back
Working in a silo compartmentalizes your thought process, creates tunnel vision, and isolates you from a broader community, and restricts your access to new audiences or resources.
This silo effect is often unconscious, as you plug away at doing “your thing.” It takes intentional mindfulness to (1) see the opportunities around us and (2) to engage in meaningful, purposeful relationships.
Examples of silos are a fitness coach ignoring local wellness businesses or a graphic designer not connecting with copywriters.
Perhaps these instances exemplify those who see themselves as standalone businesses, or perhaps they don’t even realize there are opportunities being missed.
The risks of staying isolated:
missed opportunities
slower growth
reinventing the wheel
Forming complementary networks is an untapped opportunity. When we reflect on complementary networks we often think of obvious examples, such as real estate agents engaging with home inspectors and photographers.
But every business has a complementary network available to it.
Build a network plan that includes colleagues within your industry and at least 3-5 close relationships within complementary networks.
The nature of these relationships will challenge your siloed mindset, nudging you to explore creative solutions.
“The fastest way to grow your small business is to find partners who already have the trust of your ideal clients. A single co-hosted webinar with a complementary expert can open doors you’d never reach alone.”
The Benefits of Building Bridges
Let’s dive deeper into the benefits of building bridges to complementary businesses.
This is an informal approach to networking, intentional but not contractual. These
Relationships are based on trust and desire to grow your businesses.
Expanded Reach: There’s reciprocal value to your combined audiences, with both receiving expertise from the other.
Mutual Growth: Referrals and collaborations create win-win scenarios.
Low Commitment: Informal arrangements avoid the legal and financial complexities of partnerships.
Trust-Building: Leveraging established relationships in complementary fields enhances credibility.
These bridges may look like a wedding planner referring clients to a florist, or a web developer collaborating with a content creator for a joint webinar.
This is to highlight that the value of these relationships is not only for you.
My mantra is, “We’re all a body of knowledge. The more we learn from one another, the stronger/better we all become.”
How to Identify Complementary Solopreneurs or Businesses
When identifying complementary businesses, or those businesses that serve similar audiences but offering different services or products, it’s easy to go after the proverbial low-hanging fruit. However, I challenge you to dig deep and identify niche connections.
Regardless, you always plan these relationships around the needs of your clientele.
Here are clear, actionable steps you can take to find the right collaborators:
Step 1: Map your audience and identify their needs outside your expertise.
Step 2: Research local or online businesses/solopreneurs in adjacent niches.
Step 3: Use platforms like LinkedIn, X, or local networking events to find potential collaborators.
Step 4: Evaluate alignment in values, audience, and professionalism.
Tip: Start small with one or two potential connections to test the waters.
I personally have tested these relationships by collaborating on workshops, community events, and classes. Every collaboration has led to long-lasting relationships that form my network today.
View this habit of creating bridges as intentional curation of your personal network.
You create the path you walk in business and in life in general.
Your Task: List 3 businesses in your niche you could reach out to this week and schedule a meetup.
“Strategic alliances with businesses that serve your audience but don’t compete with you are a game-changer. My best growth came from partnering with a web designer who referred clients needing branding advice.”
Strategies for Effective Collaboration Without Formal Partnerships
Keep your networking approach simple. Plan engagement around mutual referrals, joint content, cross-promotion, bundle offers, or networking introductions.
Create a mutual referral system (e.g., “I’ll send clients your way if you do the same”). Keep it simple and track referrals informally. This is a nonmandated approach to referring services. Ensuring any referrals are the best fit for a client is easy, since there is no obligation.
Another fun way to build bridges is by creating joint content. Co-create blog posts, social media content, or webinars to share audiences (e.g., a photographer and a makeup artist hosting an Instagram Live).
Cross-promote one another’s services in newsletters or social posts. Make it simple by preparing a brief blurb that is ready whenever an opportunity arises.
Be creative in your approach. Offer a discounted package combining your services with a collaborator’s (e.g., a life coach and yoga instructor offering a wellness package).
Finally, encourage networking introductions. Introduce collaborators to your network to build trust and reciprocity.
Emphasize communication. Set clear expectations at the onset and maintain regular check-ins.
Overcoming Challenges and Building Trust
Forming these types of relationships doesn’t come without challenges.
Strong relationships rely on a foundation of trust and clear communication. Ensuring these foundational pieces are in place will mitigate common obstacles such as misaligned goals, unequal effort, or lack of trust.
Solutions:
Start with small, low-stakes collaborations to test compatibility.
Be transparent about expectations and benefits for both parties.
Build trust through consistent communication and delivering on promises.
Tip: Focus on collaborators with a similar work ethic and audience focus.
My Final Word
Infuse new life and new growth into your business. Take a few minutes this week to brainstorm on the various ways you can collaborate with people in complementary industries.
Identify potential collaborators in your local community, networking groups, or online (e.g., LinkedIn, X, Facebook) and reach out to one potential collaborator.
Collaboration doesn’t just expand your reach—it builds a community that fuels success.
