Confronting Fear and Finding Your Path

My friend, Jonathan, has been in the mortgage loan business for over ten years. He’s great at what he does, but he’s exhausted any and all growth opportunities. He’s even moved and changed companies to squeeze the last bit of upward mobility out of the industry.
“I just don’t want to do it any more.” His voice is filled with a level of exasperation that I’ve heard from many people over the years.
“Have you thought about what you might want to do?”
“I don’t know. I really have no clue. What do you think I should do?”
And so this familiar cycle goes.
You hit a wall in life and reflexively reach out to anyone for an answer. Literally, anyone. Even complete strangers. It’s as if you’re experiencing an emergency and are willing to give the nearest person full control of your life. We are searching for a novel answer that hasn’t revealed itself to us. Maybe this person has it in their possession.
I’m not a complete stranger to Jonathan, but I still don’t have a magic solution for his life.
I’ve written about fear before, but it’s well worth a regular repeat. Fear is one powerful mofo. Even when we’re at our most resolute, fear can make us spin on a dime.
Today, let's dive into one of those universal human experiences that can feel like a fog in the morning – fear, but not just any fear, the kind that stems from not knowing what you want out of life. It's that deep, existential dread when you wake up and think, "What am I even doing here?"
We've all been there, feeling like a drifter floating on a raft in the vast ocean of possibilities, where every direction seems equally daunting or meaningless. But here's the thing: feeling lost is not an endpoint; it's a part of the journey. It's a sign that you're on the cusp of something transformative if you're brave enough to explore it.
The Fear of Not Knowing
First off, let's acknowledge that this fear is entirely normal. You're not alone if you've ever felt like your life's compass is broken, or worse, if you've never felt like you had one to begin with. This fear often masks itself as indecision, procrastination, or even overcommitment to distractions – anything to avoid facing the big, scary question of "What do I want?"
The real kicker? This fear isn't about the unknown; it's about confronting the possibility that what we want might not align with what society, family, or even our past selves expected from us. It's about the courage to redefine success, happiness, and purpose on our terms.
Embrace the Quiet: Sometimes, what we need is not more information but less noise. Give yourself permission to slow down. In the quiet, away from the incessant buzz of social media and the expectations of others, clarity often whispers. It's in these moments of stillness that you can hear your own desires, fears, and needs more clearly. Think of it as decluttering your mind; just like you clear space in your home, give your thoughts room to breathe.
Experiment with Mini-Lives: Life's too short to live it all at once, but you can test-drive different aspects of it. Try new hobbies, side projects, or even short-term jobs that intrigue you. Each experience is like a mini-life that teaches you more about what you enjoy, what you're good at, and what you can live without. Remember, it's not about committing forever; it's about gathering data on what makes your soul sing.
Dialogue with Your Fears: Instead of running from fear, sit with it. Have a conversation. Write down your fears about not knowing what you want. Ask yourself, "What's the worst that could happen if I choose this path?" Often, when we put our fears into words, they lose some of their power. This exercise isn't just about facing fears but understanding them. Fear often guards what we value most deeply – our desires.
The Power of 'No': Learning what you don't want can be just as enlightening as discovering what you do want. Start saying 'no' to things that don't resonate with you, even if they're what everyone else is doing. Each 'no' is a step towards defining your 'yes'. It's about setting boundaries that reflect your true self, not the version you think you should be.
Reflect and Reframe: Regularly look back at your life's chapters. What moments made you feel most alive? When did you feel most like yourself? Use these reflections not as regrets but as guides. Reframe your past experiences as lessons rather than failures. Remember, every moment of indecision or perceived failure is a stepping stone to understanding your true desires.
Moving Forward
The journey from not knowing to knowing isn't linear. It's messy, filled with backtracks, and sometimes, you'll feel like you're wandering in circles. But each step, even the ones backward, is part of your journey.
Fear of not knowing what you want out of life is a signpost, not a roadblock. It's an invitation to explore, to question, and ultimately, to live more authentically. So, give yourself grace in this process. You're not failing at life by not having everything figured out; you're living it, learning, and growing every single day.
Let's make a pact to honor our journey, no matter how uncertain. Here's to finding our path, to the courage to redefine what we want, and to the wisdom to know that every step, even the ones into the unknown, are steps towards ourselves.
Until next time, keep exploring, keep questioning, and most importantly, keep living your life on your terms.
Sending you all Peace, Love & Harmony,
Michele
