Incorporate Your Envisioned Future Into Your Present Moment

The transition from dark night, to dawn, to daybreak is one I savor each morning. The start of another day is like the blank page of a journal. I am the writer who fills the lines with whatever I want. I don’t worry what the next year will bring, the next month, or even the next week. I have today. So, I ask myself, “How will I make the most of today?”

How often have you heard the sage advice, “Live in the present moment! Do not worry about the past or have anxiety about the future.” Does it leave you wandering, “Exactly how do I do that? And why?”

Focusing on the present moment can be so . . . mundane. Let’s just say it, it’s boring. There is a plodding day-to-day routine most people follow to complete what they need to complete. I’m speaking specifically to the people who may fall into that routine but there’s something outside that routine that they want to accomplish. A goal. A dream. How do you fit that thing into an already busy life?

No wonder people get so tripped up over what they want out of life. They can only see so far ahead, and the lack of clarity further out sets the stage for fear, uncertainty, and doubt. And there, my friends, is where hopes and dreams die.

You constantly have gurus and influencers telling you that lack of total commitment, not plowing through full steam ahead at a high rate of speed, means you will never follow through. You have to do it all now, now, now!

Not true. You have choices. You can decide if you do a slow roll into your envisioned future or if you fast track it.

Whether you succeed or fail has little to do with how fast you accomplish something and everything to do with mindset.

I much prefer keeping my life in a harmonious flow, not burning a lifetime supply of midnight oil over the course of a year. I’ve lived the churn and burn lifestyle. Yes, it resulted in major accomplishments. It also resulted in major burnout.

I think it is possible to live life on your terms, building dreams into reality. I also believe it takes time, maturity, and an abundance of patience.

TIME:

Time is finite. Too often people are managed by their schedules, instead of being the managers of their schedules.

They have duties and obligations that are plugged in first before fitting in (as best they can) other things. Work and errands take a priority over physical and mental health. Work pays bills, yes, but overworking at the neglect of self-care is short-sighted.

MATURITY:

Maturity is often tied to age, but there are more poignant examples of maturity. I know young people who are mature beyond their years, and older people who behave like children.

Maturity means to be fully developed. You may have an idea that you would like to act on, but it isn’t mature, yet. It takes time for ideas to take shape.

Not everything is meant to happen now. Don’t rashly abandon an idea if it isn’t panning out today. I have attempted new ideas that just don’t work. I don’t force them. If they don’t work, they don’t work. However, if there’s a place for them in the future, they are ready for plug and play.

I also have ideas that I think I want to act on in the future. If they partner well with what I am growing, then I’ll fold them into the mix. If not, they’ll either stay in my dream parking lot or be removed.

PATIENCE:

Patience is something we have buckets of when we don’t need it and a thimble full when we do.

A 2017 study published in Psychological Science found that nearly 80% of people preferred immediate rewards in lieu of waiting.

I can attest to that figure (and actually think it’s growing) through my experiences coaching people. As soon as someone believes their projected goal will take more time than expected, the majority tap out.

We don’t like waiting. Waiting signals that it may not happen. So, we take what we can get now. It’s your inner cave person telling you that food, shelter, and other essentials are in short supply and you will die if you don’t take advantage of them as they become available. Only, we have 24/7 access to basic needs and every luxury imaginable. Still, your inner cave person is suspicious.

Bringing the Future Into Today

Ask our magic question, “What are the ways I can incorporate the life I envision into today?”

Here are follow ups:

  • What do I want to accomplish?

  • How much time can I commit today?

You don’t have a deadline. YOU set the deadline. You are the adult in the room who decides when things get done. It’s all you, my friend.

I don’t want you to focus on the outcome. I only want you to focus on how you can bring it into today. Whatever it is, this applies.

  • Do you want to lose 50 pounds? Eat healthy foods today, or move more today, or lift weights today.

  • Do you want a new job? Research the type of job you want today, or work on your resume today, or network today.

  • Do you want a solo business? Do case studies on successful people and business like the one you want to start today.

365 todays = the thing you said you wanted to accomplish a year ago.

Bring the future version of your life into today until you reach your future version. Get it?

Sending you all Peace, Love, & Harmony!
